Waste Disposal & Recycling Glasgow
Lifting the waste is only half the job. Getting it to the right facility, and being able to show where it went, is what keeps you on the right side of the law, so we put just as much care into that part.
Responsible disposal
Where your waste goes matters
It is easy to find someone with a van who will take waste away. It is harder to know where it ends up. In Scotland, whoever produces waste keeps a legal responsibility for it until it is properly recycled or disposed of, so if an unregistered carrier dumps your waste in a lane or a lay-by, the trail can lead straight back to you.
Jettison is a SEPA registered waste carrier with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditation. Every load we collect, whether from a home, an office, a shop or a building site, comes back to our depot in the east end of Glasgow, where it is sorted into separate streams. Reusable items go to charity partners, materials go to licensed recycling facilities, and only what is left goes for energy recovery or disposal. Our recycling rate is over 90%.

Doing it properly
How we deal with your waste
From the moment it is loaded to the moment it is reused, recycled or recovered, this is what happens to the waste we collect.
Your duty of care
Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 places a duty of care on anyone who produces, carries or disposes of waste. For businesses, that means using a registered carrier, describing the waste accurately and keeping waste transfer notes for at least two years. We provide the notes and the registration details you need.
How we segregate
Loads are separated into metals, timber, plasterboard, cardboard and paper, plastics, glass, rubble, green waste, electrical items and residual waste. The more that is sorted, the more can be recycled, which is why we sort at our own depot rather than sending mixed loads straight to a transfer station.
Reuse before recycling
Recycling is good, but reuse is better. Furniture with fire labels, working appliances, office equipment, books, clothes and household items that still have plenty of life in them are offered to charities and reuse projects. Our guide to donating furniture in Glasgow lists some of them.
Electricals and fridges
Televisions, monitors, computers, white goods and small appliances are covered by the WEEE regulations. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and insulating foam that need specialist treatment, so they go to approved facilities. Read more in our guide to disposing of household electricals.
Sofas, armchairs and POPs
Upholstered domestic seating can contain persistent organic pollutants from older flame retardants. When it cannot be reused, it has to be kept whole and destroyed, usually by incineration with energy recovery, rather than sent to landfill. We keep it separate from other waste for exactly that reason.
Reporting for businesses
For contract and repeat customers we can report on what we collected and where it went. That helps with ESG reporting, tender submissions and ISO 14001 environmental management systems, and it shows customers and staff that your waste is handled responsibly.
