Finding out that someone close to you died alone at home is hard enough, and having to deal with their home afterwards can feel overwhelming. Often the person who calls us is a son or daughter living some distance away, a solicitor acting as executor, or a landlord or housing association with a tenancy to close. Whoever you are, we listen first, keep things simple, and handle the property with the same care we would want for our own family.

Some homes need specialist cleaning before or alongside the clearance. That cleaning is carried out by specialist trauma cleaners, and we work with them so the property can be cleaned, cleared and handed back. Our part is the clearance itself: we safely remove affected furniture, mattresses, carpets and soft furnishings and dispose of them correctly, then clear the rest of the home, setting aside personal items, documents, photographs and valuables for the family.

How we work, what happens to the contents and the order in which things are done.

Careful, unhurried work

Our uniformed team arrives knowing what to expect and works quietly and respectfully. Items that have been affected are wrapped and removed safely, and we do not discuss the job with neighbours. Before anything else goes, we check drawers, cupboards and pockets for paperwork, photographs, jewellery and cash, and keep those safe for you. If you want particular belongings kept, tell us and we will set them aside.

What happens to the contents

Affected mattresses, carpets and soft furnishings are not reused. They are kept separate and disposed of correctly through proper waste routes, as you would expect from a SEPA registered carrier. Unaffected furniture and household items come back to our Glasgow depot to be sorted, and anything suitable goes for reuse, charity or recycling. Upholstered seating is kept whole under the POPs rules, and we leave paperwork when the job is complete.

The order things happen in

Usually the property is released to the family or landlord first, then a specialist cleaning company assesses it. Where they need contents out of the way, we clear first, or we follow them once they have finished, depending on what they advise. We can agree timings directly with the cleaners if you would prefer not to be in the middle. Most families do not attend; keys can be left with us or a neighbour.

Do you do the specialist cleaning yourselves?
No. Specialist trauma cleaning is carried out by specialist companies with the right training and equipment. We work alongside them. Our role is to safely remove affected furniture, mattresses, carpets and soft furnishings, dispose of them correctly and clear the rest of the home, so that the property can be cleaned, cleared and returned to the family, landlord or housing association.
What will the clearance cost?
Every property is different, so the rate depends on the size of the home, how much is in it, which items need to be handled separately and how easy the access is. We agree an up-front rate before any work starts, usually after a visit or from information the cleaners or landlord can share, so that the family is not asked to look round the property.
Will we get back personal belongings and paperwork?
Yes. Before clearing, we look through drawers, cupboards and bags for documents, bank papers, photographs, letters, jewellery and cash, and set them aside for you. If there are particular things you would like kept, such as a piece of furniture or a box of keepsakes, tell us beforehand and we will make sure they are not cleared.
Who is responsible for clearing the home?
That depends on whether the person owned or rented their home and who is handling the estate. Usually it falls to the executor or next of kin, or to the landlord once a tenancy has ended. Do I have to be there on the day?
No, and most families prefer not to be. You can leave keys with us, a neighbour or the solicitor, and we will call you before we start and again when we finish. If you would like to visit once the property is cleared and cleaned, we can arrange to hand the keys back to you there.
